I found my purpose as a representational painter that speaks to my story, in relation to God.
Much like when Daniel Gerhartz, says in his book, “Not far from home” in talking about his painting “Awaiting His Return”. He describes a longing for Christ’s return and he writes “What I often find when a subject moves me this strongly is that my emotional response is rooted in the way the narrative reflects Gods presence in my life.” Foundationed in a desire to renew Gods presence using art to communicate messages of faith hope and love that changes others. CS Lewis said “We do not want merely to see beauty... we want something else which can hardly be put into words- to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it”. I pray that I can paint beauty to plant a seed in others that blossoms into true beauty that comes from within. I am currently involved in a painting that is part of the series that’s attending to my vision, a painting titled, ‘Wings of Hope’, a 5’x6’ life sized composition that tells my story and related my experience to many women and children, a portrait of a women in distress over her child, crying out to God, whose meeting her where she is in a dungeon of hopelessness, and reaching out to her, picking her face up to trust Him, to see He has her baby is safe in His hands, with wings ascending over them in a symbolic “finding refuge in the shadow of the wings of the almighty”. This painting for me is a combination of my many experiences in life, and struggles in direct relation to my son. It reflects feeling afraid and being judged when I found out I was pregnant, the trials of discovering my son had health problems, and needing surgery when he was born, of which he thankfully recovered from, and lastly, the intensely painful time when my son’s father and I broke up and my son was in the middle. Through those experiences I had a vision of this painting, (Jesus’s hand under my chin, lifting my face off the ground, in gesture, Him telling me to look Him in the eyes and Trust Him.) God has powerfully been there for me through all of these moments. I have plans for the displaying of the painting in multiple venues. Upon Completion in October 2016 I will hold an unveiling reception at my studio as well as at the Carenet Pregnancy Center’s annual banquet, in whose organization the painting will be generally displayed, as well as going into Gallerys and future exhibitions. Robert Heri says in, “The Art Spirit”, “When the motives of artists are profound, when they are at their work as a result of deep consideration, when they believe in the importance of what they are doing, their work creates a stir in the world’. My hope is to make a difference. |
